Surgical Services at Mt Evelyn Veterinary Clinic and Animal Hospital

At Mt Evelyn Veterinary Clinic and Animal Hospital, we offer a fully equipped, dedicated surgical suite staffed by experienced veterinarians trained to perform a wide range of surgical procedures. Your pet’s safety, comfort, and wellbeing are our top priorities before, during, and after surgery.

Common surgical procedures we perform

Desexing – ovariohysterectomy (female) or castration (male)

Routine procedure to surgically remove ovaries and uterus (females) or testes (males) under general anaesthesia, in order to prevent unwanted mating and eliminate or reduce the risk of gender-specific health concerns such as pyometra (females) and prostate cancer (males).

Anal Sacculectomy

Surgical intervention to relieve patient discomfort and prevent reoccurring infections and compactions, where an anal gland (bilateral) or both anal glands (unilateral) are removed.

Enucleation

Surgical removal of the entire eyeball due to severe damage and/or advanced ophthalmic disease, to improve patient comfort when other treatments are no longer effective or relieving.

Exploratory Laparotomy (gastrointestinal surgery)

A surgical assessment within the abdominal cavity to determine the cause of the patient’s clinical presentation, and intervene/repair as required. For example, removal of a foreign object.

Perineal Urethrostomy

The surgical shortening and redirecting of the urethra, usually in male patients, to create a ‘new’ urethral outlet for urine to be excreted.

Urgent Abdominal Surgeries

As well as routine surgeries – every effort will be made to accommodate and perform life-saving surgical interventions. Disease processes or illnesses that may warrant urgent surgical attention include pyometra surgery (removal of severely infected uterus); exploratory laparotomy (as mentioned above); haemabdomen (blood-filled abdominal cavity) due to trauma or non-traumatic causes; removal of bleeding or compromised organs such as the spleen (splenectomy); gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) surgery to decompress and untwist the stomach.

Lump Removal

The surgical removal of lumps either in the form of biopsy(s) to diagnose or treat a potential sinister growth(s), or complete excision of a lump(s).

Orthopaedic Surgery

Surgical interventions on problematic or injured legs including fracture repair; digit amputation; limb amputation; cruciate ligament repair in the form of total plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) or a DeAngelis and patella stabilization.

TPLO’s and other specialised procedures are completed by Dr Karin Davids, please see the link below to find out more about Karin. www.pengyvet.com.au/about

Gastropexy

An optional preventative surgical intervention to reduce the risk of stomach rotation (volvulus) by suturing stomach wall to the abdominal wall.

Pyometra Surgery

Emergency removal of an infected uterus, often life-saving for unspayed females.

Your Pet’s Safety Under General Anaesthesia

Every pet undergoing surgery at our clinic is assigned a dedicated veterinarian and veterinary nurse to provide and implement individualised care plans for each of our patients.

On the day of their surgery, each animal will receive a physical assessment and any relevant and recent history is obtained from owners to ensure we implement the safest and most appropriate plan throughout their surgery and hospitalization You’ll also have the opportunity to speak a member of our surgical team about the procedure and ask any questions or express concerns.

We strongly recommend the following for all surgeries involving general anaesthesia:

  • Pre-anaesthetic Blood Testing – Involves analyzing a small blood sample to check your pets liver, kidneys and overall organ function. This helps the vet identify underlying health issues, determine if anesthesia is safe, and adjust the anesthetic protocol to minimize risks. Tests are done in-house on the day of the procedure for fast, accurate results.
  • Intravenous (IV) Fluids – To correct any circulation deficits in order to improve tissue perfusion and to help maintain safe blood pressure throughout the procedure, and support a faster and more stable recovery.

Comprehensive Pain Management

At Mt Evelyn Vet Clinic, we believe pain relief is essential—not optional. Every surgical patient receives a tailored pain management plan designed by the attending vet to ensure maximum comfort before, during, and after the procedure.
