Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of hormones. It is one of the most common diseases seen in middle-aged to older cats. In over 95% of cases, it is caused by either a benign tumor (adenoma) or non-cancerous overgrowth (hyperplasia) of thyroid tissue. Malignant tumors are a much rarer cause.
